DESCRIPTION: Come work with me! This is a hybrid postion based in Charlottesville, VA. It is a three-year termed position that may be renewable based on programmatic needs.
The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost is seeking a Communications Generalist to join its team and provide communications support for several exciting pan-University initiatives. These initiatives bring together faculty, staff, and students from multiple schools and disciplines for collaboration and to work together on complex challenges.
Reporting to the Director of Communications in the Provost’s Office, the Communications Generalist will spend approximately half their time on efforts related to UVA | Innovates, a pan-University entrepreneurship initiative. The remainder of their time will be devoted to communications related to Precision Health/ Precision Medicine initiatives supported through the Grand Challenges program, the Brain Institute, and the Gun Violence Solutions Project, although the specific initiatives may change over time.
Anticipated duties include
Advising the leaders of each initiative about communications activities that will enhance and advance their work with varied audiences that include students, faculty, staff, and external groups.
Developing and executing communications strategies and multi-faceted plans that might include writing press releases, and developing content for websites, social media, newsletters, talking points, presentations, reports, and print and digital collateral. At times, this may involve working with both internal colleagues and with external vendors.
Serving as a point of contact for media inquiries and coordinating with the director of communications to manage responses, in consultation with University Communications colleagues when appropriate.
Advising faculty and staff on publication projects, media appearances, public presentations, marketing activities, and promotion of events.
Managing ongoing and special events: promoting events, coordinating speakers, serving as media contact, and collaborating with staff on the design of the event.
Overseeing the work of freelancers and contracted vendors as needed.
Collaborating with colleagues within the Provost’s Office and across Grounds.
Other duties may be assigned in addition to the above responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with at least three years of relevant experience.
– Must have excellent writing and editorial skills and the ability to be resourceful, prioritize requests, and take initiative when appropriate.
– Must understand the importance of following the University’s brand guidelines in all communications and adhering to federal requirements for digital accessibility.
– Should have strong oral communication skills and proficiency with social media and basic graphic design.
– Must be adaptable and willing to learn new technological platforms (design, newsletter mailings, etc.)
