AGENDA

  • We’ll start with a day trip to Cedar Key, a historic fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico and home to UF’s Nature Coast Biological Station. Science communicators from UF’s acclaimed Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences will team up with researchers studying sea level rise and ecosystem economics to discuss how to share these types of stories with your audiences.
  • Back on campus, we’ll hear from UF historian Jack Davis, author of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning history book The Gulf and the just-published The Bald Eagle. Jack is a compelling storyteller who will talk about his discovery and creation process. Jack has also agreed to participate in the URMA Book Club.
  • We’re also working on a panel discussion with representatives from The Conversation and UF faculty authors. You’ll hear first hand how you can work with faculty to reach millions of readers.
  • UF is a national leader in the study of Implicit Bias. Psychology Assistant Professor Colin Smith will lead a discussion of how to recognize bias in the science we cover and in our own writing.
  • UF graphic design Assistant Professor Dori Griffin, author of the new book Type Specimens: A Visual History of Typesetting and Printing, will lead a discussion on the role of typography in our publications, including analysis of some URMA publications.
  • Recruiting and onboarding in the era of the Great Resignation, with representatives from UF Human Resources.
